Monbulk Recreation Reserve.
Sparkling new clubrooms, netball, football, skate park and bmx all in the heart of Monbulk. The soccer pitch, tennis courts and older netball courts are just across the road too.
Monbulk Netball Club
MONBULK NETBALL 2/3/23 done
I spent a great deal of time at these netball courts in the 1970s.
Not just when Olinda played Monbulk but our Sherbrooke Rep netball trained here.
Finals were often played here too and Olinda saw a huge number of finals games.
Great memories and some wonderful people.
This was pre-digital cameras and all I have are memories.
Monbulk Primary School
Since 1887 Monbulk has had a primary school, originally known as the Dandenong Forest Village Settlement State School and being renamed to Monbulk School in 1899. This is a gorgeous school and like so many others in the Dandenongs, retains it charm whilst offering great facilities.
Monbulk Secondary School
Monbulk High School done
My sisters went to Monbulk High (I only made it to Orientation Day before a place opened up at Tintern). I remember the uniform being quite strange and the skirts very short, ah, it was the 1970s after all.
Founded in 1963 and looking nothing like it does now, the buildings were the delightful grey brick of so many government schools in the era.
Celebrating their 50th Anniversary in 2013, their Facebook page shows the contrast in dress code from the very early years to the laid-back, no uniform of the 1970s.
Monbulk Pool
Monbulk Aquatic Centre offers more than just a pool, with a great gym as well. They offer many classes including swim school, aquatics plus a swimming squad.
Back in the day there was a caravan park adjacent to the pool site.
Hard to imagine now with all the growth however it was open space, sunny and popular.
The Monbulk Pool opened in 1967 thanks to the fundraising efforts of the local community.
You can read more about the development plans for the Baynes Park precinct on the facebook page of the Monbulk Historical Society on May 19 2021.
The Monbulk Marlins are the resident swimming club and have their early origins in a backyard swimming pool before the pool was open.

Thanks once more to the wonderful Monbulk Historical Society, preserving local history.
Monbulk RSL
Monbulk RSL
https://www.monbulkrsl.org.au/
Formed in 1946 and originally operating out of a cottage in Moores Rd (Wellington Cottage), the story of the new building is very interesting and there are many familiar names involved. The land was donated by the Severino family in memory of their son Frankie, a community effort building and fundraising effort followed, ensured the Monbulk RSL had a permanent home.

LOCAL HISTORY
Monbulk Post Office
Not the current post office but back in the day. When I was growing up the Monbulk Post Office was where Aldi now is.
The Monbulk Historical Society wrote about it in 2019 and the link is below. The post office moved in 1980 and, as always, the historical society welcomes any historical information or photos
Monbulk Mechanics Institute
Have you ever wondered why so many towns have Mechanics Institutes? Did you know that Monbulk has had, not one, but two Mechanics Institutes?
The Monbulk Historical Society talked about the Monbulk Mechanics Institute in their Summer of 2016 newsletter. I was fascinated as had never heard about it.
The first Mechanics Institute was built in the early 1900s and was the hub of social activity. Set between the current Community hub and the primary school, it was lost to the bushfires of February 1913, along with the school and many homes.
The second Mechanics Institute was quickly built, once more becoming the social hub. Unfortunately, it too was lost in 1972, destroyed by vandals.
In the late 1960s, a fundraising dance was held there for the new swimming pool, Olivia Newton-John and Ian Turpie attended as special guests.
